TUITION
As a general rule tuition is in the pupil or student’s own home and lasts one hour. Where there is sufficient demand, group tuition (2 - 4 pupils) can take place in the tutor’s home or at an agreed venue. In the case of group tuition, it is expected that a  parent or  other responsible adult remains throughout the session.

Lessons normally take place at least once a week. However, there may be occasional slots for fortnightly lessons at a slightly increased cost.

The catchment area for BASIC SKILLS TUTORING is Plymouth and the immediate surrounding area.

ORIGINS
BASIC SKILLS TUTORING developed over a number of years out of my experience as a Personal Tutor and more specifically in response to national statistics showing that some 20% of pupils in the UK on entry to secondary education are not well enough equipped in English and Maths to deal with the demands of the National Curriculum at Key Stage 3 and beyond. At the same time there is a significant number of highly able pupils who are not always adequately challenged in the classroom. With additional support these pupils may achieve well in national tests or in the 11+ examination.

CURRENT PRACTICE
The British Education system promotes pupils from one year to the next regardless of their level of achievement. Without additional support some pupils may be left behind, either because the new tasks confronting them are too demanding or, in some cases, not demanding enough. The risk is that pupils may miss the opportunities education has to offer.

SUPPORT
BASIC SKILLS TUTORING aims to complement work at school by offering much needed support in all areas - both academic and personal so that each child has a better chance to reach his full potential.

With express parental permission, I am prepared to make direct contact with schools on parents’ behalf to establish the exact nature of the course a pupil is following or to discuss special educational needs.
